Bong, Major Richard
1920–1945
   Bong was a US pilot who achieved the greatest number of victories in the USAAF. He served in New Guinea with the 5th Air Force and in 1942 was flight leader of the ‘Flying Knights’ Fighter Squadron of P- 38s. During his career he managed to shoot down forty planes and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He died in 1945 while testing a P- 80 jet in California.
